It's been a week.
So I'm starting a new column today that's sort of meant to be a round up of the past week. In the future, it will probably mostly be a collection of a few recent events/articles that I found that I thought were pretty interesting + any posts that I had recently made. I have some doubts that I will stick to a weekly column of this, it could easily become an every fortnight/every month sort of deal depending on the week.
Anyways, bit of mixture of posts on my side this week and it will probably mostly be soccer posts next week with the season right around the corner!
1) Easily topping off the headlines this week was the news that the Beer Mile record got smashed, and I mean smashed! Corey Bellemore initially shaved 8 seconds of the record, knocking it down from 4:47 to 4:39, before attempting it again just a few days later and obliterating both records with a time of 4:34.25. When it comes to miles, those are monumental improvements. It's even more impressive when you know the rules of the Beer Mile - Four laps. One full beer per lap. Doesn't sound fun to me!
2) Since introducing a 5 pence charge for plastic bags in supermarkets last year, England has reported an estimated shrinkage in plastic bag usage from a yearly 7.5 billion plastic bags to 1 billion. That makes me really happy.
3) According to a Harvard study, the most influential factor that causes marriages to split is not financial strain or the increased ability to get out of modern marriages, but whether or not the husband had a job (same-sex couples were not studied in this particular study).
4) As part of a birthday present for Finland's 100th birthday, Norway is considering giving Finland back a mountain that would be it's highest peak. Warm, fuzzy feelings.
5) Rio. Today. This is going to be fun. Now, the Olympics has always been one of my favorite things but I think at this point, we all know it's going to be a giant train wreck. From the water that will "make you violently ill if you ingest 3 teaspoons of water" to officials locking themselves out of a stadium, make sure you grab the popcorn. Also, I appreciate a good Russian doping joke. Comic done by Bruce McKinnon.
